In the quaint town of Jonesville, Michigan, a story is etched in the bricks of a building that has seen the turn of centuries. It's the story of the J.J. Deal and Son Carriage Factory, an edifice that has transcended its industrial past to become a beacon of historical preservation and community revitalization.
The saga begins in 1857 with Jacob J. Deal, a blacksmith with a vision. After moving to Jonesville, Deal set up a humble blacksmith shop, forging a small number of lumber wagons. His craftsmanship and dedication soon saw his business thrive, prompting him to sell his shop in 1865 and embark on a full-time venture into wagon and carriage manufacturing. This was the genesis of what would become a town landmark.
Deal's new factory, erected across the street from his original shop, grew in size and scope with each passing year. By 1890, the foundation of the current structure was laid, marking the beginning of an era of prosperity and innovation. The factory, under the new name J.J. Deal and Son with Deal's son George as a partner, expanded its workforce to over 100 men by the late 19th century.
The turn of the century brought a new venture for the Deals: the world of automobiles. In 1908, they started assembling 'Autobuggies', marking the transition from horse-drawn carriages to motor vehicles. These automobiles, manufactured until 1911, were a symbol of modernity and progress, though their time in the spotlight was brief. By 1915, the era of the Deal Automobile came to an end as the company ceased operations.
The building, however, continued to pulse with life and industry. In 1922, it became the home of the Universal Body Company, and later, in 1927, the Kiddie Brush & Toy Company, which produced beloved children's toys under the Susy Goose brand. The factory even had a stint in creating Barbie and Ken furniture for Mattel in the 1960s. Each of these chapters added layers of history and character to the building.
However, the latter part of the 20th century wasn't kind to the old factory. It stood underutilized, a silent witness to the changing times, until 2014 when a new chapter was written. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority recognized the building's historical value and approved tax credits for its redevelopment into the Heritage Lane Apartments.
Today, the J.J. Deal and Son Carriage Factory stands proudly as a four-story brick testament to resilience and adaptation. Its architecture is a classic representation of late 19th-century industrial design, with a long, rectangular footprint, and a façade featuring double-hung windows and brick bands that add character to its elevation.
Inside, the building harmoniously blends its past with its present. The lobby proudly displays an original J.J. Deal Buggy, a tangible link to its carriage-making days. The building now provides a home for 44 families, complete with modern amenities while maintaining its historical essence.
The J.J. Deal and Son Carriage Factory is not just a building; it's a chronicle of change, adaptation, and endurance. It's a place where wheels turned to walls, and history found a home. This enduring landmark stands as a testament to the spirit of Jonesville, embodying the town's past, present, and future.
